Let’s face it, we get a bit older every day, but getting older doesn’t have to mean getting old. As you age, you change physically, mentally and emotionally. Embrace these changes by doing whatever it takes to age well.

Enjoy the effects of antioxidants. Add foods rich in these compounds to a healthy diet, such as berries (blueberries, strawberries, cranberries) and walnuts. Antioxidants are compounds that work to deactivate free radicals, thus preventing cell damage. The three best-known antioxidants are Vitamins E and C and Beta-Carotene, but there are many others, including Selenium, Lutein, and Lycopene.

Maintain strong bones. Enjoy a bone healthy diet that includes Calcium rich foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, greens, broccoli, sardines, canned salmon with bones, dried beans and peas, and tofu. You may also want to include Calcium-fortified foods such as Calcium-fortified orange juice and a Calcium Supplement.

Maintain an active mind. Try doing crosswords, Sudoku™ or other brainteasers. Reading, taking classes and remaining socially active keep your brain healthy as well.

Be positive. Research has shown that optimism and having a positive outlook are associated with good physical health, less stress, longer life and greater happiness. So be sure to look for the silver lining.

Be a social butterfly. It’s another way to keep you active mentally and physically and does great things for you emotionally. In fact, studies suggest that those with a large and active social network were more likely to live longer.

Stay hydrated! You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating – water is essential for hydration of the skin, muscles, circulation, and all organs in the body. Enjoy 3-4 glasses of pure water in addition to other liquids.
